My mission this winter has been to go as long as physically possible without turning on the gas heater. I’m at home all day, so my roomate leaves it up to me. I’ve heard the reports of heating costs and the advantages of using electricity. So, my roomie and I both have space heaters and we sleep with those on. The rest of the day, I walk around in sweats and blankets. We’ve really only used the gas for cooking our pizzas.
So, yesterday, we were paying some bills and decided to find out how much our neighbor was spending on his heat. He said he usually leaves the heat on during the day at a low temperature. He was also expecting this months bill to be about $200. I started laughing uncontrollably, because we’ve spent $60 total since August. Now, I didn’t laugh in his face, but that took me by surprise by how much we were actually saving. I told my roomate to turn it on anytime he felt like it, but he kind of left it up to me. I’m not sure if he really agrees with it, but whenever he has guests, we can turn it on to spoil them.

My roomate has this cook book called “A Man, A Can, and a Plan.” It’s put out my Men’s Health magazine. The book contains all recipes involving a can of this and that. You mix them in order to achieve a gourmet meal. Reading the book, I got the idea that these recipes are just common sense. Mix ‘A’ and ‘B’ together and you get something good.
So, yesterday, I decided I should make some spaghetti and black beans. Spaghetti is a no brainer, but the beans said to boil for 2-3 minutes and let sit for an hour. An HOUR. Who has time for that? So, I decided to just cook them for 5-10 minutes with the spahetti, right. Turns out that black beans lose a lot of their blackness, which goes into the water, and into the spaghetti. When, I strained the spaghetti, I noticed that it had changed color from a pale beige to a dirty grey. It didn’t effect the taste, but it looked horrible. The beans were still mildly hard, too. I tried to force it down, but inevitably I ate all the spaghetti around the beans, and put them back in some water to soak. They still tasted bad, but I figured that’s because they’re beans. Today, I think I’ll stick to an oven pizza.
