The Chia has Gone Sour

It’s been about 3 months since I last posted on the Chia Elephant. It’s now become a hideous monstrosity. If you could imagine a camel when it’s 50 years old, matted hair, and molting, you’d have this.

I’ve always kept it watered and with ample sunlight, but it started going down hill after a month. The stems grew out almost 2 inches long and couldn’t even hold themselves up. They drooped down, and some even fell off. Many of the seeds that never sprouted actually got moldy. And the mold has been taking over ever since. You can see the white patches in the picture. I suppose its time to dust it off and start fresh again.

What’s New in Chicago

Today, the temperature is supposed to get up to 60d for the first time this year. In lieu of St Patricks day, Chicago will be dyeing the Michigan River green. I think there is going be a parade too.

Yesterday, there was a huge immigration protest in downtown. [story]

Traffic was tied up throughout Chicago’s Loop Friday afternoon as the city hosted the largest march of Latinos ever recorded in the country.

Nearly 100,000 demonstrators were said to be in the Loop for a march and rally downtown protesting a proposed law that could send illegal immigrants to jail.

Speaking from the podium, Daley said, “Do not allow anyone to tell you that you’re an immigrant. Everyone in America is an immigrant.”

No Mayer Daley. I’m not immigrant, and I didn’t skip across any borders. The news said that many businesses in Pilsen were closed or losing money due to the rally. Go figure.

The Berghoff was a popular (well, I guess not too popular) restaurant that’s been in business for 107 years. [story] They closed two weeks ago. In the final months, they weren’t taking reservations and people waited outside almost 3-4 hours to eat inside. I ate there during college, and I think I have a glass from there. The landmark Marshall Fields is also going to become a Macy’s. Who knows if they’ll keep the Marshall Field traditions.

So, now you’re in the know. And have a great day.

Paradise Now

Before the Oscars, I saw this brouhaha over the movie Paradise Now. People were boycotting and protesting it on the belief that it glamourized the act of suicide bombings in Tel Aviv. And, of course, that’s what intrigued me to check it out.

“PARADISE NOW” is the story of two young Palestinian men as they embark upon what may be the last 48 hours of their lives. On a typical day in the West Bank city of Nablus, where daily life grinds on amidst crushing poverty and the occasional rocket blast, we meet two childhood best friends, Saïd (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), who pass time drinking tea, smoking a hookah, and working dead-end menial jobs as auto mechanics.

It’s a foreign film and you have to read subtitles, but I recommend it, if you ever get the chance.

A: Sit on a bench and act like a nut.
