The Doctor Is In

Last night, the Chicago PBS station premiered new episodes of Doctor Who. This is actually the first season of the 2005 series with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. For those of you in the dark:

Doctor Who is a long-running British science fiction television programme (and 1996 television movie) produced by the BBC about the adventures of a mysterious time-traveler known as “the Doctor”, who explores time and space in his TARDIS timeship with his companions, solving problems and righting wrongs.

Season 2 aired last year on the BBC with a new Doctor, and season 3 started a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been downloading the newer BBC episodes, but I’ve never seen this first season. What stinks is that PBS is airing the episodes at 10PM on Sundays. That’s cutting it pretty close to my bedtime. Last night, I had to will myself to stay awake, and I crashed as soon as it was over. I don’t think they’re re-running the episodes throughout the week either, so I have no other choice. Though, I’ll probably have to download this season anyways since I’m leaving in the next 3 weeks.

If you’ve never seen Doctor Who or haven’t seen the first episode, don’t worry. It’s easy to get into. Not all the episodes are a home run, but it’s fun to watch.

I DLed one episode and got bored about 10 mins into it. I couldn’t even sit through the rest. Maybe I should give it another chance……hmmmmm.

Yeah. Like I said, some of the shows are swing and miss. A few of the special effects and characters are really low budget compared to todays movies. But I think that adds to the distinctiveness of being Doctor Who. It’s either a man dressed in an obvious robot suit or a pig mask or as a window mannequin. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and it sort of pays homage to it’s British 60s and 70s roots. I’ll alert you to one of the better episodes, and we’ll see if it sticks.

PS – It looks like Doctor Who airs on Friday nights on OETA and more frequently on OPB.

For the sake of your future Korean proteges, the phrase is “hit or miss.” Dare I suggest a little EFL before you go, English as a First Language? Sorry, couldn’t resist the ruthlessness… ;) And what does it matter as long as people know what you’re talking about…but what if we get to a point that everyone changes everything so much that the figures of speech are completely meaningless? Just being a thorn…it must be because you’re going to be across an ocean in 3 weeks!

Yeah, I was intrigued with the ads about Dr. Who, but like Ceej, couldn’t get into the episode that i watched. And the glimpses I caught of the right-hand blondie arguing with the last human who is a sheet of skin between two plates of glass haven’t gripped me. I also missed most of the first episode.

You need to introduce the word “chewy” to the Korean culture. Your rice is chewy. This hamburger is chewy. That movie was chewy. Stop being such a little chew!
