Finished the 3rd graduate course on Sunday. Many of the teachers were like “We’re 30% finished.” I honestly don’t like to think about the program in this way. Learning is a gradual thing. The courses can be hard, but what we are doing is for our own self improvement as teachers. I wont be “done”.

I have many stories from this weekend. It wasn’t as boring as last week. I gained some useful information, and the new coordinator has been asking for my opinion of things. I consider one of my strengths to be my listening and reasoning skills. We are dealing with some lazy and incompetent English teachers, here.

The coordinator has a strong disdain for one of the teachers. She accused him of being an alcoholic and driving drunk. I thought that was a serious accusation, and I held my reservations. Then, the Thursday night before Friday’s class, I went out to eat dinner with him. He was drinking the hard Korean alcohol without any regard of going to classes the next day. When, others at the table wanted their cup refilled, he would rudely order another bottle. What a loser. Somehow he has managed to keep a wife and hold a job.

During the dinner, he said that he skipped 2 grades of middle school. He graduated high school at 16. I thought, “Dude, you’re either lying your pants off or you might want to keep that to yourself, because these days you look like a total ignoramus.”

At one time this weekend, a small group of us were getting briefed from a teacher from the previous 2007-09 program. We were standing around a whiteboard. This ogre like girl saddles next to me. Unconsciously, she starts edging her way in front of me, and I was like “WTF? You show up late to the briefing and then obstruct my view.” I carefully touched her shoulders and guided her back to the side of me. She said, “Oh, I didn’t see you there.” I was like, “F*ing, ogre.”

Last week, I was pretty adamant about buying the Motorola Roi. It’s like the Motorola Droid, and it runs the Android OS. Then, this weekend I found myself overhearing this conversation about jail breaking the iphone. I know that people can jail break the iphone and ipod touch, but I haven’t looked into it deeply. The benefits sounded convincing, and I went back to thinking that I should buy the iphone as my next phone.

Even though I’m studying Korean, I dont have that many opportunities to “use” my Korean. Living in Korea; that sounds pretty unlikely and stupid, but it’s true. (I’m trying to change that.) I’ve studied how to order food in books, but I never do it just because … I never order food. This weekend, I was asked to order pizza and call taxis. I thought it would be a burden, but I approached it as a Korean speaking test. Can Mers pass the test and have pizzas delivered for the starving foreigners? Let’s find out. The verdict was in, and I passed. Twice!

At the end of the course, we had to do course evaluations. And I gave my 2 cents in the comment section. I said that some of the videos and discussions were irrelevant to the course topic. The teacher appeared very passionate about these discussion, but they still had nothing to do with the course. I wrote how the course should be improved for next time and having all the teachers together should have been used more effectively. The class didn’t meet my expectations.

At the end of last week, I went to a couple of my usual dorrent sites. (You know how it goes. I need my weekly download of “So you think You Can Dance”.) However, I was greeted by an error message. It was a lot of undecipherable garble. I thought the website might be down. So, I thought nothing of it. Websites go down, but they come back up.

Well, today. I go back to the website and it’s the same mess. I went to another website, and it was the same message. NOO. I tried a dorrent site that I never use. Gahhhhh! I went to the blog “dorrentfreak”. RAAAGGGEEEE! I see what you did there.

These websites didn’t go down, but these websites have been blocked from the network. And whose network would I be using? The School. You cheeky bastards.

I guess someone has noticed my bandwidth usage. I’m using a static IP, so they must know its coming from me. But rather than talking to me about it or asking me to lower bandwidth usage, they blocked me from visiting the websites. You think you’re *sooooo* smart.

My dorrent client will keep working. They can’t block that or keep it from connecting to peers. (unless they cut off my internet) But they think they’ve stopped me from downloading dorrent files from visiting the websites. lol

I WILL reduce the bandwidth I’m using. But, if I can’t use the school network to connect to these websites. I’ll just visit these sites through someone else’s network. You haven’t won.

I’ve told you how I felt about the standard music players and their restrictions. So, let me tell you about what got me on this train of thinking. It was my modded Nintendo DS.

The modded DS works using a homemade operating system (OS). The Nintendo DS starts up like it normally would. Then you go into the OS like you would start a game. It utilizes a soft mod, so there is no hacking of the DS involved. You cant break the Nintendo DS. It boots and now you can run the DS like a media center. The two key features are playing backed-up games and the media player. With the media player, you can read e-books, view pictures, and listen to music.

Watch this video for a visual walkthrough.

When I didn’t have my PC, I was using the music player quite a lot. It utilizes the DS speakers like a boom box. When playing music, it will go into standby mode, so that it will use less battery. Pretty slick. I’ll use it in the mornings when I stretch or to listen to my Korean lessons out loud. I use the e-reader for game faqs. I’ll load text files onto the DS and revert to them when I get stuck in a video game. Therefore, if I’m on the train and I get stuck in a game, I can find the answer right away.

But, here’s the icing on the cake. Adding music, games, pictures, and text files to the storage is simple. The memory storage is a microSD card. I bought a 4GB card for cheap. Slide the microSD into the provided USB adapter, and it will function like any thumbdrive.

The thumbdrive will work with any computer, and everything is drag and drop. Simply copy your music from a PC to the memory and whooop there it is. There is no iTunes or Zune software necessary. I know where I store the music on my computer. I don’t need iTunes to build a library for me.There are no restrictions to music files it will play. (Well there are a few, but they’re moot). If you want to copy your music and files to another computer, once again, just drag and drop them off. Simple.

Why can’t my iPod or the iPod Touch work like this? (Well, I know why, but nevertheless…) I dont want to install iTunes or any chunky software. I want it to play any music or video format, so that I dont have to re-encode anything. Any PMP, should be this easy and I think there is: the Cowon O2.

I’ve read a couple reviews, and the Cowon O2 appears to have everything I would want. It will play a plethora of audio and video codecs. It has a big touch screen, built in speakers, upgradeable storage, and drag and drop file transferring. How cool is that? When my iPod nano dies as my primary mp3 player, I know what I’m stepping up to.

Over the weekend, I went back to Daegu and visited some old friends. I brought back my desktop PC, and I set it up last night. I’m still going to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu Linux on it. However, I need to get the internet in my apartment up and running. Then, I’ll be satisfied.

I think I’ll be buying my beerkit soon. Apparently, my Daegu friend has already tried one of the Korean kits. He made me a list of the things I’d need to puchase with the kit, and he told me about his tribulations.

Also, I’m wondering “What happened to this guy?” When I first met him in Korea, he was planning his Tran-Siberian trip. He loved exploring. He was blogging. But since he returned to Korea, he seems so institutionalized (if that’s the right word). He has no real desire to try anything new or break out of his daily routine. He doesn’t blog anymore. He wants to change jobs, but he doesn’t want to leave the neighborhood. He has a girlfriend, and I know she’s a factor. (The way he acted around her made me gag.) For some reason, the flame is burning out on him.

I may have found an iTunes work around. (You remember my previous gripe about the mp3 players.) The solution may be YamiPod. It’s a small application that will run off the iPod and allow you to have functional access to your iPod library. I’ll test it out tonight.

I finished playing Sonic Chronicles on the Nintendo DS. Man, that was brutal. I finished playing the game for the sake of finishing it, but it wasn’t that fun. The gameplay, the battles, and story were all weak. Time to try something new.

I can’t wait for the new WordPress 2.7 update. This is the blog software I use. The new dashboard looks cleaner, more efficient, and functional than its current state.

Today, I’m going to hit E-Mart or Lotte for some pepero. I’ve heard stories of Korean teachers seizing pepero in the classroom. But I’ll hand some out to the cool kids.

Lastly, I was watching a TV program, and they were baking a large cookie. Or I thought they were baking a large cookie. They were putting cookie dough in a pan, but actually they were putting cookie dough on top of a cake. It was cookie dough for icing! Why didn’t I think of that? Cookie dough icing, YUM!

The conventional Portable Media Player (PMP) sucks. Yes, I’m looking at you, iPod and Zune. It takes some left-wing thinking, but I feel it is the right one.

Story time.

I’m using a laptop, which the previous English teachers at my school have used. Upon receival, I began sifting through the files. What I first learned is that one of the teachers had been a Zune user. I looked through the music folder and was bewildered to find over 20 Gigs of music! Wow.

The teacher was an older man, so he had a lot of, what I would call classic or old bands. Some of it was good; Some of it was not. However, when I tried to play the music… It wouldn’t play. WTF. It wasn’t playing in VLC player, which is a swiss army knife of music players. What gives?

It turns out that this teacher was on the straight and narrow path. The majority of his collection was ALL legally purchased music from the Zune store. Now, there is no shame in that. It’s an honorable route. But, it’s not my route. Living in Korea away from your comfort music can be rough. Some of these older bands would be hard to find on any pirate websites. So, purchasing these albums would be the ideal choice.

However, these files are laced with DRM. Efff that, I say. This is why I couldn’t play the music with VLC player. The DRM wouldn’t allow me. “OK”, I thought, I’ll open the Zune software and listen to his music collection. Nope! I can’t do that either. To listen to the music, you have to log in with your Zune password. “Gaaahhh, foiled again!”

There were 20 Gigs of music here and none of it was playable.

… I know, right? In the end, there was nothing I could do.

/Uninstall Zune software. Goodbye. /Select all music folders and delete. Goodbye music. You are of no use to me. What a shame.

Now, let’s look at you iPod. I’ve been using you for the last 2 years and you are not without fault either. I’ve never bought music from the iTunes store. So, I wont comment on that. I still buy most of my CDs. However, all iTunes songs, also, come laced with DRM. Can I use iTunes songs with a Zune? No. Can I use iTunes songs with a Creative Zen? No. I have to use and iPod. Where’s the freedom in that?

And, dont even get me started on the quality of the song downloads. An mp3 is not a lossless file.

Secondly, I have to use that gorram program iTunes. I hate it. All I want to do is transfer MY music from MY computer to MY iPod. But, the software is so bloated. It does all of this shit that I dont want it to. I dont want you to download new updates. I dont want you to try and sync with the internet or take me to the iTunes store.

I dont even have iTunes installed on this laptop. I dont want to install it. Therefore, I can’t add new music to my iPod if I wanted to. I cant take music off either. If you go into the iPod filesystem, all the songs are garbles and unreadable if you try to take them off the iPod.

Before I came to Korea I thought about buying a new Nano. I thought about buying an iPod Touch, too, for the video capabilities. I’m glad I didn’t. There are restrictions and limitations of the video you can put on it. I dont want to spend hours converting video to the appropriate format of Apple’s choice.

The current standard is too restrictive and limited. I dont like it. There has to be a better PMP out there. And I think there is. When my nano dies, I wont go back for another one. I dont care about the ‘cool’ or ‘wow’ factor. I’m going to blast it up a notch.

Sometime ago, I blogged about a little piece of software, CHDK, that would add more function to your Canon pointandshoot. I never got around to the project, because I didn’t have an SD card reader. I cant put the CHDK on the SD card.

Well, maybe, I can kill 2 birds with one stone.

I haven’t been playing my DS much either. I have a modchip device for my DS, which I bought in Korea. It worked for a time, but eventually “backup” games began to freeze during mid-game. It was annoying, because I got to the end of FF3, like the very end, and it would continuously glitch at one spot. It happened with Zelda, too. I’m not certain what is causing the freeze. I dont think it’s the games, and I blame the outdated modchip. So, I’m buying a new different card.

The new one uses SD memory to backup and store games. To put games on the SD card, you can hook it to the PC with a small USB reader, which comes with the modchip card. You see where I’m going here.

Maybe, I can get the DS to run backups again, without freezing, AND add the CHDK to my pointandshoot. Supposedly I can add some media functions to the DS, as well. I can’t wait!

Since I’ve been home, I’ve been on the hunt for my missing media and tea mug. I’ve been missing my media the most, because it was a box of DVDs and CDs. I’m talking live bootlegs, ripped DVDs, homebrew software, and just archives of stuff. It was tragic that I couldn’t find this box.

Did I leave it in Chicago? I dont think so.
Did the box bounce out of my roommate’s truck when I moved? Possibly, but not likely.
Where the hell is it?!

Today, I walked upstairs and stared hard at my Dell computer boxes. The big one is for the tower. Those two are the monitors. What’s that bottom one? I moved all the boxes. Sure enough, at the bottom of the stack, there it was, my missing media! It’s been sitting at the top of the stairs all this time. I walked by it maybe ten times a day.

Well, that’s uncovered. Now,… if I could only find that tea mug.

Lately, I’ve decided that my computer should be doing something.

When on the computer, I just surf the web, listen to music, and watch video. (That’s all I bought it for.) It’s not CPU intensive or working to it’s full capacity. Often, I allow the computer to run when I’m not using it directly. I bittorrent overnight, but still the computer isn’t really doing anything. I’m not using any CPU power or being productive. Until, now!

I decided to do some folding.

Folding@Home is a project from Stanford University that uses millions of networked PCs to form a supercomputer for protein folding simulations. The client software is loaded on a PC, it contacts the central servers, and receives “work units”. The client then runs on spare CPU time, and uploads finished work units to the server. ~Folding@Home

I first set it up using Windows. The client was hassle free, but then I watched my folding in progress. I realized that folding my protein would take hours (or days) to finish. I don’t like using Windows for that long. So, I had to research the Ubuntu alternative.

With Ubuntu, I dread installing anything that’s not in the Package Manager (automated installer). It’s a bit of a hassle to find an up to date tutorial, and I’m not a linux wizard. Luckily, installing the folding program didn’t take too long (~2 hours).

This is protein p2526_AM22-43. Thus far, it’s taken a day for my P4 3GHz Dual Core CPU to get half way through this beast. But, now, I can actually put my computer to work for something useful.

This year, I’ve decided that its time that I give back to the software, the websites, and the artists that are making a difference.

So, I’ve got $20 in my paypal account that I’m going to divide amongst four services, which I use most. No, $5 isn’t much, but “A journey of ten thousand miles begins with a single step.” And, this is a first for me.

Wikipedia – Not a day goes by that I dont check facts or read articles on Wikipedia. The site doesn’t take ads or commercial sponsors. Therefore, they need donations. Supposedly, $40 will deliver 100 million page views. $5 should cover myself and a 1000 others.

Ubuntu – 4 years ago, I learned that Ubuntu would ship CDs of their software to anyone FOR FREE! Of course, I was all over that. I tried the software, but never took it seriously. Now, I use it as my main operating system. They still give away their software and pledge to always do so.

Saul Williams – I’ve never purchased digital music online. My major issue is with the quality. I dont want lossy mp3s. If I buy music online, it should be the same lossless quality which you get on a CD. Saul is selling his new album for $5 at his website, and you can receive it in a lossless format. Saul takes a vocal stance against the music industry and purchasing his album eliminates the middleman.

Fourth? – Well, I haven’t picked a fourth yet. There are many worthy causes. I feel like I should make a contribution to the Pirate Party or I should give the money to the EFF, these groups fight “legally” for online rights. I could also give the money to a smaller Linux group or lone programmer. And, there is also NPR. I dont know yet.

Can you recommend anything else?

Since living in Korea, I’ve been trying out some new software and web apps. The biggest software change was the Ubuntu operating system. I played around with it before, but I could never shake off Windows XP as my main operating system. (Recently, there was a major upgrade to Ubuntu called Gutsy Gibbon. Maybe you heard about it.)

The second change I made was Gallery. This is a photo gallery, which I can run on my web server. I’ve been using this in lieu of Flickr, Photobucket, or Google’s Picasa because… Well, I dont have a good reason. I was going to abandon it many times, but I kept working with it. Those other services have better functions and faster bandwidth. But, it seems redundant for me to pay a web host for servers and bandwidth, and then pay Flickr for their servers and bandwidth.

Though, Ubuntu and Gallery have been relatively easy to set up they’ve had their share of problems. My biggest problem with Gallery was the uploading tool. Using the web interface, I could only upload photos manually and 8 MB at a time. This took hours considering that I’d sometimes take over 100 photos per trip. There were, supposedly, some better uploaders for this task, but I was never able to get them running. Luckily, I was able to find a new feature.

I was messing around with F-spot, a pre-installed Ubuntu application, for viewing photos. I was looking for easy ways to rotate vertical photos. Luckily, I was in the menu bar and noticed the exporter. It listed Flickr, Picasa, and … Gallery as possible exports. ORLY? Could this really work with my Gallery installation. /cue the Kool Aid Man.

OH YEAH!

It works. Now, I don’t have to manually sit at the computer and upload photos five at a time. Ron Popeil must have created F-Spot, because I just have to set it and forget it! A time consuming job, now, easily takes care of 100s of photos at a time. Thank you to whomever added that functionality

I’ve been using Google personalized homepage since it first rolled out, and now I’m loving the new themes feature. I got off work today, logged into my gmail account, and noticed some new text on the personalized homepage. Hello, “Select theme!” How long have you been there? Not long, I see.

I like Google. They’ve been my only search engine since my early college days. I’ve always had them as my default homepage. So, it made sense to use the personalized page and add my own customizations. It’s now my web portal with the awesomeness of google search. (Though I usually type search into the Firefox bar. Maybe there is some web psychology behind that). Anyhoo, eventually, I did get tired of the white background. Firefox has a couple plugins called Greasemonkey and Stylish. They add some ways to change the look of the personalized page, but they were never that great. They usually changed a few text or background colors. On certain holidays, you’d see a new Google logo replace the original, but it was still the plain white google page.

The new themes add a lot more liveliness to the basic google page we’ve grown up on. There are currently 6 themes, but more have been proposed. They add a spiffy dynamic graphic to the top background and it will blend the colors to the rest of the page. The dynamic graphics will change accordingly to the conditions of your area code: day, night, cold, hot, season. Personally, I like the Tea House theme. Green is so calming and the Asian fox dude is cool.

I think the old guy is checking if he’s “Sure” or not. Apparently he isn’t, because no one wants to be around him. =P

EDIT:
After the first 24 hours of using the new themes feature, I was sure that I had seen all of the backgrounds for the “Tea house”. I thought it might be an neat idea if there was a special picture that would only load on a specific time and disappear the next second. Well, apparently there is: Themes Easter Egg. You need to reload the page at 3:14AM. (Pi Day!)

There is also a css edit to make the image appear without being on the 3:14AM time. It shouldn’t be long before people make their own backgrounds. (if they aren’t already)

So, what is toomanychamploo.org and how did it come into my possession. Well, pull up an ice block and lend an ear.

In late 2004, I was at SIUE and plagued with morning and evening classes. I didn’t want to commute home in between classes. Therefore, I spent much of my time on campus and in the computer lab. Occasionally, I did work. =) I mostly killed time and downloaded stuff. If classmates needed to find me, they knew where to go. Sometimes a class would require the computer lab, and teachers thought I was in their classes. As you can imagine this got boring quick and I needed something to occupy the seconds ticking by.

At the time, there was a buzz about a new anime series, Samurai Champloo. It was being produced by the director of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichiro Watanabe. There had already been a few websites dedicated to Samurai Champloo, but they were becoming really neglected. Some were getting hacked or no one was updating them. I thought I could do a better job, and I needed a hobby.

I racked my brain trying to decide on a good domain name. I wrote down as many one word descriptions and adjectives and tried to combine them, like a magnetic word poem. Nothing stuck. Eventually, I was listening to some Pink Floyd, and I thought, “Man, these song titles make no sense.” And, it struck me. The name didn’t need to make sense. So, one of my favorite artists had this song called “Too Many Chiefs…Not Enough Indians”, and I decided that that will do. And Too Many Champloo… was born.

Let’s see. My first blog post is dated 8/12/05, but there were some before that that got lost in the internet. I was trying out different blog software and content managers. Though I’d like to redesign the Samurai Champloo area, I’m now dedicating more time into this blog. There isn’t any more Samurai Champloo information coming out and it’s pretty stale. With this blog, I’d like to branch off into newer territories and have a website for me, my family, and side projects away from the Samurai Champloo name.

Again, I racked my brain trying to pick out a new domain name. I wanted something airy, friendly, and easy to remember. After much debate, I decided upon timbertank.com. Originally, I thought about tanktimber, but it was already taken (what are the odds). But now, I think I like the words swapped better. Bonus points to whomever thinks they know what the name means. Or if you feel like making something up, that will do too. (cause I really have no idea! ) I’ve got a starving artist working on an image, and that might help. So, yeah. Moving day will be coming soon.

If Ceej or Clear, want to move their blogs over here, I can do that. It would be timbertank.com/clear like timbertank.com/blog will be. Or if any other readers want a free blog or bandwidth, you can hit me up. I’ll consider it.

Sometime this month, Google started to include Metra and CTA (the public transportation) locations on their Maps service of Chicago. This makes me super happy! You dont know how many times I had to find a particular restaurant or location, then head to the CTA website and find the nearest ‘L’ stop in relationship to it. It was an unnecessary hassle going from website to website.

But, of course, the service isn’t perfect. A couple locations are off by a block or two. All the CTA stops are denoted by a blue ‘M’. That could be confusing to tourists because the CTA color codes the ‘L’ trains by the Red line, Blue line, Pink, etc. And what does the ‘M’ stand for? I suppose it’s just an indicator used from another city. Oh well. For the most part, I’m savvy enough to get around.

This is a project that, thanks to some creative souls, took no time at all. It involved updating the programs on my modded Xbox to some of the more current and capable versions. I’ll just start at the very beginning and try to keep it simple.

In late 2003, I really wanted to play Star Wars KOTOR, but I didn’t have an Xbox. Around the same time, there was a community of people who were hacking the Xbox and giving it more functionality than it was allowed to do. (ie skinned dashboard, back-up games to the hard drive, XBMC (Xbox Media Center) ) It seemed easy enough, and I needed something to do.

In the process, I had to buy an Xbox, a modchip, a larger hard drive, and some CD-RWs. It took me 4 days to get running, but with certain limitations. The main thing I wanted it to do was back-up games and run them off the hard drive. No problem there. The main problem was with the media center. It was glitchy. I couldn’t play DVDs. I also couldn’t reset the internal clock. Yeah, the clock is small beans, but it created errors when saving games. It would always reset to 11/12/8700. But albeit, it still worked, and I was able to play 30-40 games off the hard drive and I never tinkered with it again.

Back to the present: My roommate and I wanted to watch videos from my PC on the new TV. I thought the best way to do this was to update the software on the Xbox and link it to my PC. In short, I bought a crossover cable, to link the PC to the Xbox, and found SlaYers EvoX Auto Installer. And it was as simple as that. The auto installer contained current builds of the modified dashboard, updated DVD software, and fixes to the XBMC center with all new codecs and support. It was painless to update took care of everything I needed.

So, this post really goes out to the developers and contributers for all of their work and dedication to this project. Thanks and maybe I’ll attempt a 360 mod in the future.

PS – With an emulator, I can now play all the Game Boy Advance games on the Xbox. That’s bliss!

Happy New Year, everyone. Or as I call it, ‘day after yesterday’. I stayed in the apartment, drank a couple beers, ate some gourmet apple, and played video games. 30 minutes before the ball dropped, I went to bed. I was feeling tired and what the body wants – the body gets. There’s no way I could have hung with my roommate until the crack of dawn.

I want to thank everyone for their Festivus and birthday gifts, but the one I’m enjoying the most right now is one of my roommate’s. His parents got him a spanking new 26″ widescreen HDTV w/ DVD player. He had it in his room for awhile, and swapped it out with the old one, yesterday.

At first glance, I didn’t think too much of it. I didn’t expect the rabbit ears to do much for an HD TV, and I laughed a bit. Then, we did a channel search. Along with the regular analog channels, we’re receiving digital channels for each one. Whenever, a channel came in fuzzy, we’d have to turn the knob on the rabbit ears to search for a clearer signal. With digital, there’s no need for that. As a BONUS bonus, we’re picking up High Definition channels. How sweet is that? I think there are 4 of them: ABC, NBC, FOX and one special PBS channel. We’re watching a College Bowl game now and it’s mind blowing! Hello, blade of grass! Hello, fan in section XZ seat 32! Heck, just the flat screen in itself is awesome, because there is no glare from the sunlight.

In the next week or so, I’m going to have to do some reading on all the technical aspects of HD. I never payed attention to all the buzz on my tech shows, since I didn’t have an HD capable tv. I know I’ll need an HDMI cable to have HD with my XBox games. I’ll have to put some research into streaming video from my computer to the TV, now. The Apple iTV might be one easy answer when it arrives, but I know there are other solutions.

I was perusing a message board, today, when someone mentioned ‘pointing out Wilhelm screams’ and referring back to a youtube video. Huh? Well, I watched the video and listened to two screams and yelled, “AH HA, I KNEW IT!”

We’ve all watched Star Wars a hundred times, and yet there is this one sound clip that has always frustrated me. It’s a cliché scream, and I’ve heard it in dozens of movies. In many cases, the scream doesn’t even match the voice of the character. It’s as if it’s just being thrown in there. Well, here’s the answer:

The Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the movie Distant Drums. The scream was most likely vocalized by actor-singer Sheb Wooley. The Wilhelm’s revival came from Star Wars series sound designer Ben Burtt, who tracked down the original recording (which he found as a studio reel labeled “Man being eaten by alligator”) Its use in the Star Wars films was the beginning of something of an in-joke amongst some sound designers of the film industry. In a tribute to its origins, the clip was used in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when the villain Mola Ram was eaten by crocodiles.

Now, I can take this off the list of ‘Mer’s list of Unsolved Mysteries and Conspiracies.’ Here’s the youtube video I saw, and a long list of movies which the Wilhelm scream has appeared in. Thank you, internet!

When my roommate gets utterly bored, he goes to Blockbuster and rents a movie. He rented Capote sometime ago and never got around to watching it. Most movies, he gets 15 minutes in and falls asleep. Eventually, the DVD had to be returned and he never watched it. I told him I’d copy it to my computer so he or I could watch it later. I tried my coping software, but it wouldn’t copy over. Oh well, c’est la vie, n’est pas.

Well, recently I rented Howl’s Moving castle. I tried to make a back-up of it too and it didn’t work. Therefore, something must be up. I did a quick search and found out that some movie companies are employing a new copy protection, ARccOS, to prevent people from making back-ups.

ARccOS is a copy-protection system developed by Sony used on some DVDs. Designed as an additional form of copy protection, it is used in conjunction with Content-scrambling system (CSS). The system deliberately creates a number of sectors on the DVD with corrupted data that causes DVD copying software to produce errors. Normal DVD players do not ever read these sectors since they follow a set of instructions encoded on the disc telling them to skip it. Less sophisticated DVD ripping programs do not follow these instructions but try to read every sector on the disk sequentially, including the bad ones.

Many major titles are using this protection, so I had to update my DVD ripper to DVDFab Decrypter. Normally, DVDShrink does all the work of ripping and compressing the dvds, but it hasn’t been updated since 2004. I’ll have to mess around with DVDFab a little more, but it handled the ARccOS protection and I can back-up DVDs once more.
